The show opened with a tour on a scooter through the streets of Durban to loud foot-tapping music ... thanks to the music Guru Mr Martin Myers at the helm!! One cannot help but get caught up in it all. The colour yellow is synonymous with Durban and with MTN. The images of surfing, the Durban beach front, kids laughing as they come down the water slide flash up on screen and I know I am finally back in one of my favourite places in the world. MTN Durban Fashion Week has begun. Let the show begin! Haroun Hansrot The style and elegance of 50’s screen goddesses rang true in Haroun’s collection this year. He opened his show with constructed jackets worn over tailored pants. I thought I was over the animal print story until I saw how cleverly Haroun had sneaked it into his range. The zebra stripe chiffon scarves and the layering of zebra stripe under sheer chiffon or chiffon over sequin… it worked… and really well! His red evening gowns that closed the show with beaded corsets and bra tops were every screen sirens dream. It gave me great pleasure to see women who looked sexy, subtle and with the elegance of a by-gone era. Gavin Rajah Paris in spring time, Gigi and Eat, Pray, Love were all the movies that flashed before me whilst watching Gavin’s collection. The French Riviera knits teamed perfectly with relaxed separates and accessorized with hats and bows in the models low ponytails. Rajah’s meticulous attention to detail is always evident in his styling and in putting his show together. It’s all beautifully orchestrated in the final production. The ball gown collection was a treat and loved the pastel and floral prints with a Japanese influence. Gavin Rajah is a designer par excellance and a pretty darned good piano player too. I could not help noticing a very proud mom, Vanashree Singh sitting across the way from me, when the flower girls closed the show. Play it again Gav... Kathy Steed |
