ON THE COUCH

Saturdays will never quite be the same again, not if Rob Stuart and Heart 104.9FM , Cape Town’s Soul has anything to do with it.

Add Martin Myers and someone known only as Flapper and you have On The Couch, the most dynamic hour and thirty minutes that radio has to offer anywhere in Cape Town.

What started as merely a three-minute good idea two years ago has grown into 90 minutes of laughs, non-facts and food for thought.

Initiated by Myers and then Saturday on-air DJ Az Abrahams back in 2005, Heart 104.9 soon realised that there was such a thing as power in numbers, and Flapper joined the team. A change in station line-up and the entrance of Stuart, back in Cape Town, and On The Couch was off on a new and exciting path.

Today the passionate and sports mad trio — an accountant, a music industry veteran and a music DJ — make for fun radio.

From just after 8am through to 9.30am the phone lines light up and Heart listeners get to tackle the fanatical Flapper, referee Rob and the ever-controversial Martin on everything from try-lines to transformation.

Stuart is cricket and rugby mad, Myers follows suit with his unashamed love of the All Blacks, whilst Flapper can't be challenged on his cricket and golf knowledge.

Everything about On The Couch is entirely off the cuff and therein lies its spontaneity and in turn its success. With Stuart keeping the lines open throughout the show and a little bit of music to dilute the talk, the subject matter is relevant to the sports issues of the day — a mixture of good clean fun and addressing controversial issues.

With international sport well covered, these three wise men are hungry to expose and celebrate the best of what the country has to offer in up-and-coming talent and teams, no matter what the sport or discipline.

The trio don’t play by the rules, only because they spend more time on the bench than on the field, making On The Couch everything but formatted — instead it's fun, entertaining and downright silly at times.

Get in the Q

How the devil are you?

Rob Stuart: Busy, busy, busy! Life’s just starting to get interesting and I’m trying to figure out the best route to take. That being said I’m in need of a stylist and makeover to make sure that I get where I’m going in style!
Martin Myers: Fantastic. Always happy… there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Flapper: All good… great in fact!

Do you think you are a celebrity?

Rob: Hell No! I can barely get people to say my name properly. “Rod?” “Ron?”
Martin: Are you mad? I am just a normal person loving what I do.
Flapper: Most certainly not!

It’s my round – what are you drinking?

Rob: Anything as long as Jack’s coming to the party… Suitcase, Jack & Lime, Jack & Red Bull...
Martin: Scotch and Coke. In a tall glass, with ice please.
Flapper: Double Jamieson’s, ice and water.

What’s in your pocket right now?

Rob: I’m a typical journo so definitely a pen; Labello (must be Hydro Care); cell phone & thanks to a habit picked up by my dad, a handkerchief — yes, real old school!
Martin: Money, my car keys, my house keys, my All Black key ring and a credit card.
Flapper: Wallet and handkerchief... do people still use these?

Pick five words to describe yourself:

Rob: Rational, entertaining, plain, real, straight-up
Martin: Friendly, loyal, honest, just me.
Flapper: Consistent, loyal, real, fair, reliable.

You meet a nice lady – what’s your opening line?

Rob: I’m useless at this kind of thing… That wouldn’t be my opening line, but I’m useless with the opposite sex!
Martin: That’s a whole story, but the classic fun line is: The touch of your hand makes my pulse react”. You have to be able to think on your feet when you get the ‘huh?’ as a reply.
Flapper: Have you done your 2007 tax return?

How do you get the radio show started?

Rob: With a Disclaimer and a call to the BCCSA (Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa) apologising for all the Codes of Conduct which Martin is likely to contravene within the course of the show.
Martin: Open my mouth and say something. Sometimes without thinking, throw the thought out and run with an idea, Flapper normally has a wisecrack back at me and Robin must separate the two of us.
Flapper: Just wait for Martin to come up with some inane comment, try and make some sporting sense from all of the stupidity… which compared to him makes me sound as if I know what I’m talking about!

What do you do?

Rob: Besides the show, I produce the Weekday PM Drive show on Heart 104.9 and I’m in the final stages of my Honours degree in Political Studies. I eat, breathe and sleep media, politics and sport.
Martin: Work in the entertainment industry. I did study way back in the day and got my university degree.
Flapper: Accountant.

You are having a dinner party, name four famous people you would invite?

Rob: Mandela, Oprah, Robert Mugabe and George W. Bush… needless to say only two of the dinner guests will survive the evening!
Martin: Nelson Mandela, Bono, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Michael Schumacher, Richie McCaw… Can’t I make it eight people, then we have a whole rugby pack, not just a tight five? Flapper: Nelson Mandela, Tiger Woods, William Shakespeare and Mother Theresa.

When was the last time you went to a live sports game?

Rob: South Africa vs Australia on June 16th at Newlands during the 2007 Tri-Nations. SA beat the Wallabies 22-19!
Martin: At Newlands for a Currie Cup rugby game.
Flapper: To see England play India at The Oval, UK and Chelsea play Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge… all on the same day!

Are you superstitious?

Rob: No.
Martin: Yes, don’t walk under ladders — a cliché, I know — and number 32 always on the roulette table. I love that number.
Flapper: Touch wood, no…

What are your fears?

Rob: Not being able to do a job that I love doing and not getting paid well to do it!
Martin: Not trying to the best of my ability and not asking for help when someone knows better. It is not a bad thing to ask for advice. I tend to see it as a failing in my make up, which it is not.
Flapper: Tomatoes.

Who is your all-time greatest sportsman and why?

Rob: Rugby and cricket are probably my most loved sports but whether or not they have produced players who fall in this ‘all-time greatest’ category is debatable. So many names come to mind: Muhammad Ali (boxing); Pele (soccer); Garfield Sobers and Donald Bradman (cricket); Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong (cycling); Jessie Owens and Carl Lewis (track & field).
Martin: Michael Schumacher, what a gentleman, and people who know me know how he is linked in to my life during 1999 and 2000. Need I say more?
Flapper: Tiger Woods — exceptional talent, prepared to work even harder, humble under extreme circumstances, a legend in his own lifetime.

Name your top sporting memory:

Rob: It may sound clichéd, especially now that we’re being exposed to the images over and over again but winning the 1995 IRB Rugby World Cup did more for this country than we will ever know. The only other sporting event that could ever hope to achieve something similar is if Bafana Bafana should by some miracle win 2010.
Martin: I have many and hope to have many more. But they are 1999 Canadian F1 Grand Prix; 2000 F1 Grand Prix Magny-Cours; 2001 Boks versus England at Twickenham on Saturday and on Sunday; Arsenal versus Man United at Highbury with Arsenal winning 3-1; 2007 All Black game in Durban against the Boks.
Flapper: Scoring 184 in a Premier League cricket match.

What's the greatest sports event you have attended?

Rob: I haven’t had the privilege of attending a sports event which could be considered ‘great’ but I will predict that in 2010 my answer to this question will be the opening and final game of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
Martin: 1999 Canadian F1 Grand Prix.
Flapper: The opening match of the 2003 Cricket World Cup, SA versus West Indies.

What advertising slogan would best describe you?

Rob: Just do it!
Martin: Say something!
Flapper: What you see, is what you get!
