Saturdays will never quite be the same again, not if Rob Stuart and Heart 104.9FM , Cape Town’s Soul has anything to do with it.
What started as merely a three-minute good idea two years ago has grown into 90 minutes of laughs, non-facts and food for thought. Initiated by Myers and then Saturday on-air DJ Az Abrahams back in 2005, Heart 104.9 soon realised that there was such a thing as power in numbers, and Flapper joined the team. A change in station line-up and the entrance of Stuart, back in Cape Town, and On The Couch was off on a new and exciting path. Today the passionate and sports mad trio — an accountant, a music industry veteran and a music DJ — make for fun radio. From just after 8am through to 9.30am the phone lines light up and Heart listeners get to tackle the fanatical Flapper, referee Rob and the ever-controversial Martin on everything from try-lines to transformation. Stuart is cricket and rugby mad, Myers follows suit with his unashamed love of the All Blacks, whilst Flapper can't be challenged on his cricket and golf knowledge. Everything about On The Couch is entirely off the cuff and therein lies its spontaneity and in turn its success. With Stuart keeping the lines open throughout the show and a little bit of music to dilute the talk, the subject matter is relevant to the sports issues of the day — a mixture of good clean fun and addressing controversial issues. With international sport well covered, these three wise men are hungry to expose and celebrate the best of what the country has to offer in up-and-coming talent and teams, no matter what the sport or discipline. The trio don’t play by the rules, only because they spend more time on the bench than on the field, making On The Couch everything but formatted — instead it's fun, entertaining and downright silly at times. Get in the Q How the devil are you?
Rob Stuart: Busy, busy, busy! Life’s just starting to get interesting and I’m trying to figure out the best route to take. That being said I’m in need of a stylist and makeover to make sure that I get where I’m going in style! Do you think you are a celebrity?
Rob: Hell No! I can barely get people to say my name properly. “Rod?” “Ron?” It’s my round – what are you drinking?
Rob: Anything as long as Jack’s coming to the party… Suitcase, Jack & Lime, Jack & Red Bull... What’s in your pocket right now?
Rob: I’m a typical journo so definitely a pen; Labello (must be Hydro Care); cell phone & thanks to a habit picked up by my dad, a handkerchief — yes, real old school! Pick five words to describe yourself:
Rob: Rational, entertaining, plain, real, straight-up You meet a nice lady – what’s your opening line?
Rob: I’m useless at this kind of thing… That wouldn’t be my opening line, but I’m useless with the opposite sex! How do you get the radio show started?
Rob: With a Disclaimer and a call to the BCCSA (Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa) apologising for all the Codes of Conduct which Martin is likely to contravene within the course of the show. What do you do?
Rob: Besides the show, I produce the Weekday PM Drive show on Heart 104.9 and I’m in the final stages of my Honours degree in Political Studies. I eat,
breathe and sleep media, politics and sport. You are having a dinner party, name four famous people you would invite?
Rob: Mandela, Oprah, Robert Mugabe and George W. Bush… needless to say only two of the dinner guests will survive the evening! When was the last time you went to a live sports game?
Rob: South Africa vs Australia on June 16th at Newlands during the 2007 Tri-Nations. SA beat the Wallabies 22-19! Are you superstitious?
Rob: No. What are your fears?
Rob: Not being able to do a job that I love doing and not getting paid well to do it! Who is your all-time greatest sportsman and why?
Rob: Rugby and cricket are probably my most loved sports but whether or not they have produced players who fall in this ‘all-time greatest’ category is debatable. So many names come to mind: Muhammad Ali (boxing);
Pele (soccer); Garfield Sobers and Donald Bradman (cricket); Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong (cycling); Jessie Owens and Carl Lewis (track & field). Name your top sporting memory:
Rob: It may sound clichéd, especially now that we’re being exposed to the images over and over again but winning the 1995 IRB Rugby World Cup did more for this country than we will ever know. The only other sporting event that could ever hope to achieve something similar is if Bafana Bafana should by some miracle win 2010. What's the greatest sports event you have attended?
Rob: I haven’t had the privilege of attending a sports event which could be considered ‘great’ but I will predict that in 2010 my answer to this question will be the opening and final game of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa. What advertising slogan would best describe you?
Rob: Just do it! Feature originally appeared on Entertainment Africa. Home
